Michelle Obama Publicly Attacked, Humiliated by Someone She’d Least Expect

Most esteemed officials in the academic world are positive about the Obamas, and remember their time in office fondly. That’s why it came as a shock to the former First Family, when former First Lady Michelle Obama was publicly criticized by a prominent academic leader–a black professor at Antioch University.
According to a report in the Washington Examiner, writing professor Erin Aubry Kaplan attacked Mrs. Obama in the pages of the New York Times this Friday. Kaplan claimed that Obama cares more about the opinion of well-to-do white people than she does in the plight of black Americans.
The professor wrote, “Mrs. Obama still follows the rule of assimilation: It’s more important to retain white empathy than to be truly empathetic to ourselves.”
Kaplan also criticized the former First Lady’s new book, “Becoming.” She took issue with a section in the book where Obama writes that “for the first time in my adult life … [I was] really proud of my country” during the 2008 campaign. The professor also took offense at the part of the book where Mrs. Obama described rejecting the family’s longtime paster, the controversial and anti-semitic Jeremiah Wright Jr.
Kaplan said that Mrs. Obama was trying to appease white people in her book, by paying lip service to black oppression. She said that Obama fears expressing her concerns for black America will make her be labeled “anti-American.”
Kaplan wrote, “And yet reading ‘Becoming’ made me realize, with a sinking heart, how much further we have to go before we routinely hear the whole story about black people’s experience.”
Regardless of Kaplan’s complaints, Mrs. Obama’s book has been a bestseller. The former First Lady is traveling around the country to promote the book–sometimes, she is drawing as many as 20,000 people to one location.
Many are wondering if Michelle Obama will throw her hat in the ring for the 2020 presidential election. Polls have shown that Mrs. Obama is viewed as competent and likable–she could have a very good shot at becoming the Democratic Party’s nominee should she decide to run.
